Sarasota Community Pulls Together for Kids

It’s a perfect model of how small towns work together for the benefit of their kids.

The GWiz Science Museum in Sarasota is a terrific hands-on learning experience for children of all ages. When we tell children ”Go ahead – try it!” instead of telling them not to touch, it opens up imaginations. Over the years, the learning opportunities – and fun – shared with my kids at GWiz have formed great memories.

GWiz survives on grants from the Selby Foundation, as well as the membership dollars of citizens who choose to support the cause. But this is just the beginning of the community ties. GWiz holds a camp each year for area kids, offering such diverse learning specialties as rocket camp, scuba, bugs and amphibians, health and nutrition and more. The newest endeavor is to start a movie-making track. This year, the Blivas Foundation donated 17 scholarships to area children whose economic  situation would have locked them out of such an opportunity, and the kids love it!

The classes and sessions are taught by area middle school teachers, and the camp also “employs” area teenagers who are earning their community service hours for the Florida Bright Futures college scholarship program.

From donations to scholarships to community service opportunities; from science and learning to fostering involvement and charity – GWiz and its summer camp is an awesome example of Sarasota’s caring people at work together for the common good.
